Read w/interest the post'g by Sgt Schultz about his day on July 19th @ LL Crk (not good)& his belief that poachers have thinned the trout population. I AGREE W/HIM ABOUT THE POACHERS! Have seen a severe diminishing of trout (especially the large ones) over past 1 1/2 yrs.
However, my luck has been a little better than Sarges. On July 20th I had an exceptional day, catching 17 trout(!!) ranging from 9"-14". Like Sarge, I fished Hatchery Pool & Founder's Pool, near the hatchery. Fish hit a pink BH San Juan worm, a WD-40 blk midge, a BH Hares Ear, a BH Copper John, a BH fly'g green midge, a Black Nose Dace & an olive BH Wolly Bugger. In fact, I use a tandem of 2 flies a lot & caught 2 trout @ same time, a first for me when fly fishin'. As you know, there are visitors in this section of the creek & after hooking a trout, I asked a young girl & her brother if they would like to reel it in; they were thrilled to do so. I have done this before w/other kids to see the excitement on their faces.
July 22nd was not quite as good since I only caught 6, ranging in size from 9"-15". They liked the olive BH Wolly Bugger & a midge. Also hooked & lost 3, one on a #26 female Trico Dun.
Next Mon & Tues (July 26 & 27) I am fly fishin' the Big Bushkill Crk on the Ressica Falls Scout Reservation. Hoping for good luck. |

| The size and number of trout on the Little Lehigh tends to vary naturally like they do on many streams. I never fished it until after 2000 when I started fly fishing but the amount of trout seems to be relatively consistent, sometimes higher when the hatchery floods. Flyfisher, thanks for the report, I'll have to stock up on my Beadheads! |

I fished the hatchery pool and trico run almost excluseively from about 1988 to 2004. I had many twenty fish days on Sulfurs and Tricos.
Due to the increase of commercial and residential development, soil erosion, the increase of fertilizers, weed killers, and a bottling plant (spring water) stealing water from the LL, there has been a Steady decline in the number of fish in the stream. you can still have 15 fish days, but you really have to "bushwack" for them, and put in a lot of time. Nymphs are OK, but like Sam, I like to fish the hatches. Caught a small atlantic while fishing with the Beve back in 1992 or 1993, but it was only 12 inches. looks like enough survived to grow big.unlike pacific salmon, they do not die after spawning, so maybe they will continue to grow if some are released.
