The 2009 - 2010 Meeting Schedule

Thursday Sep. 17, 2009 Bob Clouser: It’s with pleasure that we welcome back an old friend to our September monthly meeting. Bob Clouser. In spite of his world class achievements, he has the persona that sits well with the average fly fisher. Holder of many prestigious awards, Bob’s reputation is well earned in saltwater and fresh water circles throughout the world. As a fly fishing expert he has conducted schools, given tying demonstrations, published books, produced videos, and participated in charity events. Perhaps he is best known for his innovative and proven fly patterns beginning with The Clouser Minnow.

Thursday Oct. 15, 2009 Don Douple

Welcome back Don. He will do a follow-up to last years program doing a fly tying demo for us, sharing some of his tying tips and tricks. His demo will be projected on the big screen so it will be easy to follow a-long.

Thursday Nov. 19, 2009 Ozzie Ozefovich presents Feeding Lies

This voyage into The Underwater World of Trout answers the questions all anglers ask: Where are they? Why are they there? What are they eating? How do I recognize what is going on? In this study we go into the streams and examine the facts and get real answers. Some you expect, others you won’t believe until you see them yourself.

Third Annual Club Auction and Christmas Party

Thursday

Bill Skilton:

Bill will demonstrate tying fly patterns that he has developed over the years, talk about his unique materials, and discuss fly fishing the streams of Central PA...the Yellow Breeches, Letort and the much underappreciated Susquehanna River. He will have available for sale the CD format of his book and Hellgrammite Kits. You can visit his website at www.billskilton.com and check ebay for his on-line auction sales.

Bill started tying flies and fly-fishing at the age of 5 (over forty-seven years ago) under the direction of my older brother, Tony…former director of the Orvis Fly Fishing Schools. When he was in high school he started tying commercially for Ed Koch at Ed Koch’s Yellow Breeches Fly Shop in Pennsylvania and for Barry Beck at the Leonard Rod Company in New York. During and after high school Bill worked at the Yellow Breeches Fly Shop and later became the store manager. In addition, he managed Letort, Ltd., a Fly fishing/tying mail order firm that was the nation wide distributor for Partridge Hooks and Metz Necks.

Bill has operated a mail order fly and fly tying material business since 1990, specializing in developing innovative materials and flies and time-saving fly tying techniques, especially those involving synthetic materials. In addition to the Orvis Co., his customers have included Umpqua Feather Merchants, as well as international accounts in England, Japan, Scotland, Spain, and Germany. Bill continues to tie commercially as well as develop fly patterns for the Orvis Company, many of which have appeared in their catalog for the past 20 years. His flies have also appeared in several national fly fishing magazines as well as many fly-tying books.

In 2002 Bill put to paper a project that occupied the recesses of his mind for the past decade…MY FLY PATTERNS, MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUES has been well received within the fly tying community. His book’s success has inspired him to continue experimenting and developing new techniques, adapting and customizing fly tying materials and patterns.

In his spare time Bill is consumed by maintaining a flock of genetically raised Dry Fly birds and fly-fishing Southcentral Pennsylvania’s Limestone streams.

Ben Turpin:

The speaker for February is Ben Turpin. Ben is an Orvis endorsed fly fishing guide located in Saylorsburg, PA. In addition to guiding in the Pocono’s and Central Pa, Ben is a Custom Rod builder. His website is: http://www.benturpin.com/_/bt/ui/Index.aspx

Ben Turpin Custom Rod Building and Guide Service was established in 1997. The business evolved out of 20 years of fly fishing experience and a dedication to education and excellence in the sport. Ben is an Orvis endorsed guide and offers guided fly fishing trips in the scenic Pocono Mountains and Northwest New Jersey. He has been fishing these streams for fifteen years. Some of the streams in this historic fly fishing area include the Brodhead Creek, Lehigh River, Big Bushkill Creek, Big Flat Brook, and the Pequest River. Along with guiding in the Pocono region he also guides the Southeastern, PA limestone streams in the Allentown, Bethlehem, and Easton areas. These limestone streams are highly productive and just a short ride from New Jersey and the Philadelphia area.

Wet Fly Water Guides:

The program for the March meeting is Basic Equipment and Tactics to Wet Fly Fishing presented by Dave Allbaugh and George Lashinsky.

Dave and George run Wet Fly Waterguides in Western Pennsylvania specializing in the Classic Art of Wet Fly Fishing. Over the last 20 years these two have spent countless hours on the stream and at the vice perfecting and designing new wet fly patterns and customized leaders for the streams that they fish. Their mission is to teach and educate new and old fly fisherman about this forgotten classic traditional way of fly fishing and to show how productive wet flies can be through out the season. http://www.wetflywaterguides.com

Frank Plucinsky, will be sharing his presentaion entitled: “Tully Bugs and Friends”.

Frank is a retired physician with a long time fascination of the natural sciences, photography, fly-fishing and fly tying.  He has been an advocate for the Tulpehocken trout fishery below Blue Marsh Dam in Berks County Pennsylvania since its conception in 1980.

Tom Baltz will present his program called "Parachutes". In it he will demonstrate four different post materials, three different tail designs, several body treatments (techniques) and talk about why/when to tie the hackle with the shiny side up or down. Some of the techniques demonstrated will cover dubbing fur bodies, and thoughts on materials to incorporate into various parts of the fly. Perhaps "More Than You Want to Know About Parachutes"! He will use a familiar pattern like a sulphur as the vehicle. Tiers can change colors and mix any of the design features to come up with their own flies.

A New Mexico native, Tom Baltz has been a fly tier for some 48 years, the last 35 spent among the legendary tiers and anglers of the limestone valleys of south-central Pennsylvania, near Carlisle. Tom is the only four time Pennsylvania State Fly Tying Champion and his flies have appeared in Field & Stream, Fly Fisherman Magazine, Art of Angling Journal, Eastern Fly Fishing, and American Angler magazines, the Orvis catalog (I.C.S.I Midge, MuddBugger, Hatching Nymph and Beetlenat) and the recently published book “Guide Flies”. He is a Contributing Writer for the Mid-Atlantic Fly Fishing Guide and appears at fly-fishing shows around the country.
