The 2009 - 2010 Meeting Schedule
Thursday Sep. 17, 2009 Bob Clouser: It’s with pleasure that we welcome back an old friend to our September monthly meeting. Bob Clouser. In spite of his world class achievements, he has the persona that sits well with the average fly fisher. Holder of many prestigious awards, Bob’s reputation is well earned in saltwater and fresh water circles throughout the world. As a fly fishing expert he has conducted schools, given tying demonstrations, published books, produced videos, and participated in charity events. Perhaps he is best known for his innovative and proven fly patterns beginning with The Clouser Minnow. Thursday Oct. 15, 2009 Don Douple Welcome back Don. He will do a follow-up to last years program doing a fly tying demo for us, sharing some of his tying tips and tricks. His demo will be projected on the big screen so it will be easy to follow a-long.
Thursday Nov. 19, 2009 Ozzie Ozefovich presents Feeding Lies This voyage into The Underwater World of Trout answers the questions all anglers ask: Where are they? Why are they there? What are they eating? How do I recognize what is going on? In this study we go into the streams and examine the facts and get real answers. Bill Skilton: Bill will demonstrate tying fly patterns that he has developed over the years, talk about his unique materials, and discuss fly fishing the streams of Central PA...the Yellow Breeches, Letort and the much underappreciated Susquehanna River. He will have available for sale the CD format of his book and Hellgrammite Kits. You can visit his website at www.billskilton.com and check ebay for his on-line auction sales.
Bill started tying flies and fly-fishing at the age of 5 (over forty-seven years ago) under the direction of my older brother, Tony…former director of the Orvis Fly Fishing Schools. When he was in high school he started tying commercially for Ed Koch at Ed Koch’s Yellow Breeches Fly Shop in Pennsylvania and for Barry Beck at the Leonard Rod Company in New York. During and after high school Bill worked at the Yellow Breeches Fly Shop and later became the store manager. In addition, he managed Letort, Ltd., a Fly fishing/tying mail order firm that was the nation wide distributor for Partridge Hooks and Metz Necks.
Bill has operated a mail order fly and fly tying material business since 1990, specializing in developing innovative materials and flies and time-saving fly tying techniques, especially those involving synthetic materials. In addition to the Orvis Co., his customers have included Umpqua Feather Merchants, as well as international accounts in England, Japan, Scotland, Spain, and Germany. Bill continues to tie commercially as well as develop fly patterns for the Orvis Company, many of which have appeared in their catalog for the past 20 years. His flies have also appeared in several national fly fishing magazines as well as many fly-tying books.
In 2002 Bill put to paper a project that occupied the recesses of his mind for the past decade…MY FLY PATTERNS, MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUES has been well received within the fly tying community. His book’s success has inspired him to continue experimenting and developing new techniques, adapting and customizing fly tying materials and patterns.
In his spare time Bill is consumed by maintaining a flock of genetically raised Dry Fly birds and fly-fishing Southcentral Pennsylvania’s Limestone streams.

Tom Baltz will present his program called "Parachutes". In it he will demonstrate four different post materials, three different tail designs, several body treatments (techniques) and talk about why/when to tie the hackle with the shiny side up or down. Some of the techniques demonstrated will cover dubbing fur bodies, and thoughts on materials to incorporate into various parts of the fly. Perhaps "More Than You Want to Know About Parachutes"! He will use a familiar pattern like a sulphur as the vehicle. Tiers can change colors and mix any of the design features to come up with their own flies.
A New Mexico native, Tom Baltz has been a fly tier for some 48 years, the last 35 spent among the legendary tiers and anglers of the limestone valleys of south-central Pennsylvania, near Carlisle. Tom is the only four time Pennsylvania State Fly Tying Champion and his flies have appeared in Field & Stream, Fly Fisherman Magazine, Art of Angling Journal, Eastern Fly Fishing, and American Angler magazines, the Orvis catalog (I.C.S.I Midge, MuddBugger, Hatching Nymph and Beetlenat) and the recently published book “Guide Flies”. He is a Contributing Writer for the Mid-Atlantic Fly Fishing Guide and appears at fly-fishing shows around the country.
The 2008 - 2009 Meeting Schedule
Thursday Sep. 18, 2008 Great Lakes Steelhead Fishing - Rick Kustich Rick began fly fishing over thirty years ago on the lakes and streams of upstate New York. He has since traveled extensively to experience the finest fly fishing throughout North America but continues to find that some of the best fishing often exists in your own backyard. Rick has also authored numerous articles with accompanying photography for national fly fishing magazines such as Fish & Fly, Fly Fisherman, and Eastern Fly Fishing, and is a regular contributor to two regional publications. Rick provides seminars and schools throughout the year on the Great Lakes steelhead fishery and other fly fishing topics. He fly fishes nearly 80 days each year and is involved in conservation efforts aiming to improve and protect fisheries. Rick is owner and operator of West River Publishing and lives in Grand Island, NY on the banks of the Niagara River.

Over the last 8 years while operating the Baxter House, Ken has shared his knowledge and love of the local waters with hundreds of people. When not guiding or helping customers in the Fly Shop, Ken can usually be found stalking the glass like pools of the East Branch for Wary Browns or wading the pockets of the Lower Beaverkill for Wild Rainbows.
Thursday Dec. 18, 2008 Christmas Party & Third Annual In-House Auction Thursday Jan. 15, 2009 Mark Sedotti Mark is a respected fly casting instructor and teacher who has written articles that have been published in the: “American Angler, Fly Tier, Outdoor Life, The Fisherman,” and more featuring trout, pike and other species of fish. As the Casting Columnist for Saltwater Fly Fishing Magazine (1995-2000), Mark is known for his articles on Striped Bass, Bluefish, and False Albacore.
Mark Sedotti is known for casting unusually large flies (4" to over 24") tremendous distances, with uncanny accuracy. Both things once thought impossible. He does this with a unique, ultra-powerful back cast called the "Sayonara Sling". He casts distances with magnum back casts of 120’-140’
He's also had some of his fly patterns, such as the Sedotti's Slammer menhaden series, the Sedotti Mackerel, and the Sedotti Flounder, to name three, featured in articles and fly tying books. Many of his patterns are giant and are castable by design, because of his concept of "weight balancing", which involves adding enough weight to the fly to counter (and negate) a pattern's drag. He's now into tying patterns that exhibit strike triggering actions, similar to what you see in many popular soft plastic baits.
Fly Casting columnist for Saltwater Fly Fishing Magazine from 1995 - 2000, he also wrote many articles on Northeast fly fishing, and fly tying, for that magazine as well as for other major publications. Many pieces were about freshwater fly fishing too. A very skilled fly casting instructor, he's taught fly fishing at the college level in the New York City Metropolitan area for years as well.
Come join us and meet Mark Sedotti.Thursday Feb. 19, 2009 Dean is a Berks County native who was introduced to the sport of fly-fishing by his father at the ripe-young age of 6. His dad ignited the passion for the sport by taking Dean to his uncles spring-fed pond where they hooked many steelhead-sized rainbows. The addiction, though, did not really start until the age of 12. That is when Dean caught his first wild trout off the surface in good 'ole Penns Creek. To this day Dean continues to fish the numerous streams of Centre and Mifflin county as much as possible. These would be considered his 'home waters.' Furthermore, Dean has chased trout all over the Northeast along with many western states on rivers such as the Madison, Big Horn, Yellowstone, the South Fork of the Snake, the San Juan River, the White River in Arkansas and even the Alagnak River in Alaska. Since his college days, he has expanded his fly-fishing knowledge by targeting smallmouth bass on the Susquehanna River, shad on the Delaware and steelhead in the many Lake Erie and Ontario tribs. Recently, Dean has attained the thirst for the salt. Going after stripers, bluefish and weakfish along the New Jersey Coast, Martha's Vineyard and Boston Harbor. About seven years ago Dean started guiding for Tulpehocken Creek Outfitters in Reading, PA which led him to start Fly Fish Pennsylvania with a college buddy. Recently, Dean and FFPA co-owner Jake Markezin, along with other like-minded anglers founded the Lehigh Coldwater Fishery Alliance.
Thursday Mar. 19, 2009 Gary Borger Gary has been a fly fisher since 1955, and since 1972 has taught classes and lectured internationally on all aspects of fly fishing for trout and salmon.
